What a drill looks like

Every drill comes with a diagram, step-by-step instructions and coaching points, ready to run on the pitch.

Smooth passing combination with dribble, through pass and finish
Intermediate 5-6 players 10-15 min push-pass, one-touch, finishing, dribbling

Goal of the drill: players train a smooth passing combination featuring dribbles, a through pass, a one-touch return and a finish on goal from a continuous rotation.

Instructions

  1. Set up five positions as shown in the diagram: A bottom right with balls, B bottom middle, C bottom left, D left-middle towards the circle, E middle in front of the circle. Use a goal with a keeper.
  2. Player A starts dribbling from the right and plays the ball to B.
  3. B receives, dribbles a short distance inside and plays through to C on the left side.
  4. C plays a quick through ball towards the incoming E, who runs in front of the circle.
  5. E plays the ball one-touch (or with a short touch) back to the incoming D.
  6. D plays the ball on to the incoming A, who runs towards the circle.
  7. A finishes on goal from the run, preferably in one fluid motion.
  8. After the action players rotate: A to E, E to D, D to C, C to B, B to A.
  9. Start the next ball only when the finish is complete and the running lines are clear.
Coaching points
  • A dribbles with the head up and picks the right moment to release the ball to B
  • B and C handle the ball with few touches to keep the attacking tempo up
  • C's through ball must be played into E's run, not at the feet
  • E positions with an open body and returns the ball into D's running line
  • D stays in motion after running in and plays the ball on to A at the right moment
  • A accelerates after the first pass and arrives well-timed for the finish
Player focus
  • Hold the tempo of the ball through the combination
  • Scan before receiving
  • Open body shape at reception and pass
  • Timing of the running line, never stop moving
  • Clean push-pass on the forehand
  • Finish in motion
Common mistakes
  • A stops after the first pass. Have A keep running straight away so the final ball is received on the run.
  • C plays the through ball too late or too hard. Get C scanning earlier and play a flat firm pass into E's run.
  • E is closed off and cannot return cleanly. Have E run in with an open body and the stick ready.
  • D runs in too early or too deep. Time D's run to the moment E receives the ball.
  • A finishes from a stand-still. Emphasise attacking the circle with speed and finishing on the run.
Make it harder
  • Require E to return the ball in one touch for quicker processing
  • Limit B and C to a maximum of two touches
  • Require A to finish with a flat push or shot from the run
Make it easier
  • Allow E to take a touch first, then play back to D
  • Keep the distances between the positions a bit shorter
  • Let A receive in the circle without time pressure before finishing
Technique guide
  • Push-pass: Player stands low with the left hand at the top of the stick and the right hand halfway down the shaft
  • One-touch return: Player comes in with an open body and the stick already in front of the body, ready
  • Dribbling: Player keeps the ball close to the stick on the forehand with small, controlled taps
  • Finishing: Player attacks the ball on the run and places the feet so the body stays oriented towards the goal

05 Coaches

Trusted by thousands of coaches

From dedicated parent volunteers to club coordinators, here's what coaches around the world have to say.

★★★★★
"Real lifesaver. I used to spend every Sunday hunting around YouTube and various sites for drills. Now I've got a complete session ready inside ten minutes, warm-up and all. Easily saves me an hour a week."
RVRick V.Coach U12
★★★★★
"As Head of Coaching I work with a lot of parent volunteers who do this in their spare time. The ready-made periodic plans let me give them real structure. It brings calm to the organisation and the sessions themselves are genuinely better."
MBMartin B.Head of Coaching
★★★★☆
"I've never played hockey myself so I was pretty nervous before that first session. The diagrams with each drill help massively, you immediately get what you're supposed to do. The drill designer is a bit fiddly on phone, but on laptop it works really well."
SHSarah H.Parent Coach U10
★★★★★
"Brilliant that you can share a session through WhatsApp. My assistant coach doesn't need an account, just opens the link and sees the plan straight away. Saves a stack of printed paper on the sidelines."
TKThomas K.Coach U16
★★★★★
"We've rolled it out across all our youth teams. Finally a common thread running through the age groups, instead of every coach doing their own thing. Takes a bit of effort to get everyone on board, but the results are worth it."
EWEmma W.Youth Coaching Lead
★★★★☆
"Honestly, I was a bit sceptical at first, there's plenty of free stuff online. But the coaching points alongside each drill and the variations really do make the difference. You can tell it's built by people who actually know hockey."
JMJames M.Coach U14
★★★★★
"Been using it two seasons now and it's become routine. Sunday evening I put the session together, share it via the app to the team, done. Nothing flashy, but it just works, and that's what matters to me."
